PAX~World News Wants Men to Have More than They Deserve

This will probably be one of many articles in the aftermath of A Hero's Challenge: Being an Extraordinary Man. From leading our first workshop about men/for men NOTHING at PAX will ever be the same.

I'm not exaggerating. What I learned about men last weekend will change every workshop at PAX, every interview I give, and, even, our mission and principles.

Why? Because the premise in the creation of our company and the Celebrating Men, Satisfying Women workshop was that we had to have a triage approach to this man-woman thing. In our view, both men and women were suffering painfully and needlessly from women's inability to celebrate men. We thought that the majority of the problem could be corrected by addressing the misunderstandings and mistaken beliefs of women.

I honestly thought that left to their own devices, without being emasculated by women, men would do just fine. I was wrong. The need for men to celebrate men is just as critical and urgent. Why? Because, even with great PAX graduate women committed to men having what they need, it's still not happening... (read on)

Let me spell it out:

  • Women are terrible at getting what they need because they'll only demand what they think they deserve
  • Demanding what you need creates Resistance. The other person can only submit or resist and neither create a sustainably nurturing relationship.
  • Women determine what they deserve by calculating all they have given, all they have sacrificed, and the level of "importance" (read status) that they think they have achieved.
  • Men are terrible at getting what they need because they'll only demand what they think they deserve (yes - exactly the same! Big surprise to me since I thought men were better at this)
  • They demand what they need at their breaking point. This makes them very cranky. And it creates resistance just like for women (above)
  • But get this: Men determine what they deserve by adding up all the good they've done in their lives and then subtracting any wrongdoing they haven't forgiven themselves for (and they don't forgive themselves)
  • The result of this calculation is that men end up deserving much less than they need to be great men - less sleep, less appreciation, less affection, less support, etc. etc.
  • SO MEN ARE RUNNING AROUND BEING NOT-GREAT BECAUSE THEY THINK THEY DON'T DESERVE WHAT IT WOULD TAKE TO BE GREAT

For both men and women, our needs have to be disconnected from our pasts. What we deserve will never be sufficient for what it actually takes to be great. Think of it this way tonight - get a good night's sleep not because you earned it. Get it because of who you will be able to be tomorrow - more patient, more focused, more resilient - whatever sleep provides for you. PLEASE!

Love,
Alison
